WHAT IS A WELFARE BARRING?
A barring is a formal order that legally stops a person from entering a specific area of a venue. There are different types of barrings under South Australian law, used for different reasons.
A welfare barring is used only for concerns about gambling harm and is issued under the Gambling Administration Act 2019 (South Australia).
When a person is welfare barred from SkyCity Adelaide, they cannot enter a gaming area (or any other area of the property as outlined in the barring) for a set time, as written on the barring order.
We may issue a welfare barring when our team reasonably believes that a person is at risk of harm or is at risk of causing harm to a family member, because of gambling.
A welfare barring is not a punishment. It is a way to give someone time and space away from gambling at our venue.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
A welfare barring provides an opportunity to take a break, reset, and focus on life outside of gambling. It can also create space to reach out for support, if that feels right.
Across South Australia, there are free and confidential support services available to anyone. These services can help with a wide range of concerns, including gambling support, financial counselling, personal or relationship counselling, and family support.
We strongly encourage people to use these services if they feel they need support.
It’s important to note that these help services are not part of SkyCity Adelaide. They are independent organisations that provide private and confidential support in a safe environment.
When you contact a help service, you’ll be able to speak with calm and friendly staff who are there to listen without judgement and support you at your own pace.
Please note that support services cannot change or remove a barring. Their role is to listen, offer guidance, and provide support in a safe and non‑judgemental way.

A welfare barring is private and confidential
Details of a person's welfare barring are not shared with employers, immigration or visa authorities, or Centrelink. They are only shared with our regulator, Consumer and Business Services (CBS), for the purposes of administering and maintaining ongoing oversight of the barring.
RIGHT OF REVIEW
People have the right to contact CBS if they would like a welfare barring to be reconsidered. Applications must be made within 14 days after the date of the decision to make the welfare barring.
Please note, CBS is not a help service; it is the South Australian government regulator responsible for overseeing gambling laws, compliance, and barring decisions.
The CBS gambling support team can be contacted by calling 131 882 (option 0), emailing gamblingadministration@sa.gov.au, or texting 0427 051 300.
